Winter often brings more than just cold weather. The shorter days and lack of sunlight can drain our energy and affect our mood. Together, let’s discover why winter feels so heavy and how to turn the season around.
When Winter Feels Empty
This winter felt strange. The people I used to share warm evenings with aren’t around like before. Not because they’re far away, but because life has changed. Some moved on, some grew distant, and some aren’t just the same anymore.
Also, I have realised that we don’t miss people as much as we miss the memories we made with them. The laughter, the little moments, and the warmth we shared are the things we hold on to. But life keeps moving, and we have to move with it.
Why Winter Makes Us Feel Low
Winter has a way of slowing everything down. The long nights and the foggy mornings give us too much time to think. Memories come rushing back, and sometimes, they feel heavier than the cold outside.
Ever notice how you feel more tired or less cheerful during winter? That’s because shorter days mean less sunlight, which can lower serotonin levels in your brain. Serotonin is a “feel-good chemical” that helps us stay happy and positive. Without enough of it, we can feel low, irritable, or even sad. This condition is known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), and it’s more common than you might think.

The cold, grey skies make us stay indoors more, which means we talk to fewer people. As we spend more time alone, loneliness starts to set in and makes us feel worse. The less we connect with others, the stronger the winter blues can feel.
Living With Change
This winter taught me an important lesson: Life is always changing. The moments we miss will never return the same way, but they leave us with valuable memories that shape who we are.
It’s hard to accept when things aren’t like they used to be. But that’s life. It’s not about holding on to the past but learning to live with it and finding new joys.
How I Brighten My Winter Days
- Letting the Memories In
I welcome both the happy and sad memories, knowing they all carry valuable lessons that help me grow. - Spending Time with Valued People
I make time for the people who matter most to me, those who bring value to my life and fill my days with laughter and joy. They remind me how important it is to stay connected. - Focusing on Creativity at Work
I focus on being creative, as creativity is the key to what I do. It keeps me inspired and motivated, even when winter feels heavy.
Winter’s Reminder
Winter can feel cold, but it also reminds us of what’s important. It slows us down, makes us reflect, and helps us grow. Life will always change, but every change brings something new to hold on to.
As winter ends and the new year begins, I’m learning to let go of what’s gone and welcome what’s ahead. Because after winter, spring always comes with new hope.
